In Beijing on Friday, diplomats from China, Russia, and Iran gathered to discuss Iran’s nuclear issues, as reported by China’s state broadcaster CCTV. China expressed its hope that these discussions would help revive stalled negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The talks included China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who, according to CCTV, exchanged views on the Iran nuclear issue and other matters of common concern without providing further details. Beijing emphasized its desire to strengthen communication and coordination to resume dialogue and negotiations at the earliest possible time.
This meeting comes after Iran’s rejection of what it considered to be US “orders” to resume dialogue on its nuclear program, a reaction to a proposal by US President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader for nuclear talks. Trump suggested that Iran could either be dealt with militarily or through a negotiated agreement. However, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that negotiations with Washington would not occur under threats, and Iran would not submit to US “orders” to talk.
