Disruptions at Düsseldorf and Cologne Airports Due to Strikes – DW – 24/02/2025

The Cologne-Bonn and Düsseldorf airports in Germany were shut down on Monday due to a 24-hour strike carried out by public sector employees. The strike at Cologne-Bonn Airport, which commenced on Sunday evening, resulted in the cancellation of 106 out of 168 scheduled flights. Düsseldorf Airport experienced a similar disruption, with approximately one-third of its 334 scheduled flights canceled. Passengers were advised to check the status of their flights due to potential delays, cancellations, or diversions.

The Verdi trade union initiated the strike, demanding an 8% wage increase for public sector workers, a minimum monthly bonus of €350 ($367), and three additional days off. Approximately 400 employees participated in the strike at Düsseldorf Airport, which affected various areas such as administration, check-in, baggage handling, and aircraft handling. The strike will also cause disruptions at Munich Airport for two days, impacting security checks and ground services. The union hopes the strikes will put pressure on ongoing wage negotiations for public sector workers. No agreement was reached during the second round of negotiations held last Tuesday, and the third round is scheduled for March 14. Verdi has expressed its intention to cause significant disruptions during the Munich Airport strike, which is set to commence on Thursday and continue until midnight on Friday.
