Earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast triggers tsunami alerts – DW – 30 July 2025

A robust earthquake registering magnitude 8.7 hit near the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, prompting tsunami alert systems in Japan and Hawaii. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at a shallow depth of 19.3 km.

The Japan Meteorological Agency signaled a tsunami warning, cautioning waves reaching up to 3 meters could affect regions along Japan’s eastern and northeastern coasts. It warned of repeated tsunami occurrences and urged people to avoid the sea and coast until the alert expires.

Additionally, Hawaii issued a tsunami warning, urging coastal residents to evacuate due to the threat of damaging waves.

Kamchatka’s emergency minister, Sergei Lebedev, reported tsunami waves of 3-4 meters in certain parts of the region, advising inhabitants to distance themselves from the shoreline.

Kamchatka, located in Russia’s Far East, along with Japan, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone known for intense seismic activity and volcanic eruptions. In 2011, Japan experienced a magnitude-9 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, leading to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

20 years later, 2004 tsunami still haunts survivors
