On Wednesday, Politico reported that four individuals associated with former US President Donald Trump met with some political adversaries of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the idea of expedited elections.
The discussions were reportedly held with two-time former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and senior members of the political party of former President Petro Poroshenko.
In a statement on Thursday, Tymoshenko stated that her team “is negotiating with all our allies who are capable of helping to secure a just peace as soon as possible.”
“Until then, and I have stated this multiple times, holding any elections in Ukraine is impossible,” she noted.
Similarly, Poroshenko, who has a longstanding feud with Zelenskyy, also advocated for delaying elections until peace is established.
Poroshenko announced that his team “has consistently been and continues to be opposed to holding elections during wartime.”
“We have declared, and continue to maintain, that elections can only be conducted after a ceasefire and the signing of a peace agreement with security guarantees for Ukraine,” he stated on Thursday.
Additionally, he mentioned that his team operates “publicly and transparently to uphold bipartisan support for Ukraine.”
