EU Responds to Trump’s Tariffs: Options for Brussels Retaliation – DW – 04/02/2025

US President Donald Trump announced significant new tariffs on Wednesday, imposing a 34% tax on imports from China and a 20% tax on imports from the European Union – two of the United States’ main trade partners. Trump also declared that a baseline tariff of 10% would be applied to imports from a range of other countries. Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Trump hailed this as “Liberation Day,” stating that it would be remembered as the day American industry was reborn and America’s destiny was reclaimed.

Across the Atlantic, the European Commission labeled Trump’s trade policy as an act of economic self-harm and is preparing a response. In the emerging trade war with the United States, Brussels strives to appear strong while maintaining its partnership with the US. Any new tariffs would add to the existing 25% tariffs on EU steel and aluminum imports, as well as tariffs on the European automotive sector.
