Pakistan’s monsoon rain was likely heavier due to climate change, making floods more dangerous, according to a new study.
The report from World Weather Attribution, a group of international scientists who analyze the role of global warming in extreme weather, was published on Thursday.
Pakistan’s monsoon rains, from June to September, are unpredictable; this year, the country experienced more than a third more rain in July compared to last year, as per the meteorological department.
The WWA researchers, who evaluated precipitation from June 24 to July 23 in Pakistan, attribute about 10% to 15% heavier rainfall to climate change.
A warmer atmosphere retains more moisture, leading to potentially more intense rain, according to climate scientists.
“Every tenth of a degree of warming will lead to heavier monsoon rainfall,” stated Mariam Zachariah, the lead author of the WWA study and an environmental researcher at Imperial College London.
Pakistan is prone to deadly flooding
The Pakistan government has reported at least 300 deaths, nearly half of them children, due to floods, heavy rain, and other weather conditions between June 26 and August 3, 2025.
Mostly, victims were victims of collapsing buildings.
Pakistan’s rapid urbanization, with people residing in makeshift homes in flood-prone areas, intensifies the vulnerability during the monsoon season, as noted in the report.
“Half of Pakistan’s urban population lives in fragile settlements where floods collapse homes and cost lives,” stated Maja Vahlberg of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, who also contributed to the WWA report. “Building flood-resilient houses and avoiding construction in flood zones can lessen the impacts of heavy monsoon rain.”
Pakistan, with a population of 250 million, has faced numerous severe monsoon seasons leading to widespread flooding.
This year’s flooding follows the catastrophic high waters in 2022, which resulted in over 1,700 deaths during the monsoon.
South Asia faces heavy monsoon impacts
Heavy monsoon rains have caused a series of disasters in South Asia, particularly in the Himalayan region, recently.
