Rethinking the Unicorn: Myth Meets Modernity
"Death of a Unicorn," a film by Alex Scharfman starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, offers an unusual twist on iconic creatures – killer unicorns. Released on March 28 in the United States, the movie presents a narrative of human greed, satirically portraying the wealthy hunting these magical beasts on a secluded Canadian ranch. The unicorn, famed for its healing properties, becomes the center of a gruesome pursuit.
The concept of the unicorn has evolved through the ages, its origins tracing back to ancient civilizations. In the Indus Valley, around 2600 BC, seals depicted a bovine animal with a single horn, believed to be influenced by Rishyasringa, a fertile sage from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. However, it was the Greek historian Ctesias who in the 5th century BC described a creature similar to a horse with a horn capable of curing ailments, a description later attributed to the rhinoceros.
Uncovering the Unicorn’s Diverse Symbolism
Throughout history, the unicorn has been lauded for its magical powers, especially its ability to purify water, symbolizing immortality. This led rulers during the Renaissance to seek out these fabled unicorn horns, which were actually narwhal tusks. The idea that unicorn horns could purify water mirrors beliefs in the healing properties of ground pearls and reflects the paranoia of poisoning prevalent during that era.
The unicorn’s fierce yet gentle nature, able to be tamed only by a virgin, as described in the Greek bestiary "Physiologus," evolved into a symbol of chastity and purity within art. From Raphael’s "Portrait of a Young Woman with a Unicorn" to Domenichino’s "The Virgin with the Unicorn," the creature was often depicted alongside figures representing virtue and love.

Salvador Dali’s sculpture "The Unicorn" symbolizes love and desire, while pop culture has embraced the creature in various forms, from the Lisa Frank brand of the 1990s to the animated series "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic." The unicorn now also serves as an emblem for the global LGBTQ community, representing the desire for living beyond societal norms.
