Fifty fatalities recorded from Texas floods as rescue operations intensify – DW – 06/07/2025

On Sunday, nearly two days after devastating floods hit central Texas, there were still 27 girls missing from a riverside summer camp. The death toll from the disaster has risen to at least 50, with multiple heavy rain and flash flood warnings still in effect across the region. The sheriff of Kerr County, Larry Leitha, reported that 43 deceased individuals were recovered, including 28 adults and 15 children. At least 7 others died in other Texas counties due to the floods, and at least 13 others are missing from these areas. The search for survivors and bodies continues along the length of the Guadalupe River, and authorities have rescued more than 850 people in the past 36 hours. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expanded the state disaster declaration and requested additional federal resources from US President Donald Trump. The extreme weather began before daybreak on Friday, dumping months’ worth of rain in a matter of hours. The fast-moving waters of the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes, causing extensive damage and hindering rescue efforts. Officials are questioning the lack of proper warnings and the accuracy of flood alerts.
