In Gera, a city in eastern Germany, police are investigating an incident of attempted murder. On Sunday morning, a man poured a flammable liquid on a woman in a tram and set her on fire, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. The woman was airlifted to a hospital following the attack, whose motive remains unknown.
The suspected perpetrator fled the scene and has not yet been identified, said a police spokesperson. No one else was injured in the incident, which took place around 10 a.m. local time.
After the attack, other passengers on the tram pressed the emergency stop button, which the suspect used to escape. The tram driver reacted quickly, dousing the flames with a fire extinguisher. The injured woman received medical treatment on-site before being taken to the hospital.
The police also offered psychological support to the other passengers and the driver.
Gera is situated in the eastern German state of Thuringia, approximately 60 km (37 miles) south of Leipzig.
Helicopters and firefighters rushed to the scene after the incident.
