Firefighters Ambushed in Idaho, Leaving a Toll of At Least Two Dead – DW – 06/30/2025

At least two firefighters were killed on Sunday when a suspect opened fire on them while they were battling a blaze near Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, according to officials. The incident occurred at Canfield Mountain around 1:30 p.m. local time (19:30 GMT), and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reported that the firefighters were TeamSAIRE members engaged in quelling the fire. Sheriff Bob Norris indicated that there might have been more than one shooter, and he could not rule out the possibility of civilian casualties. He stressed that authorities were prepared to respond forcefully to the ongoing situation.

Idaho Governor Brad Little described this act as a heinous attack on brave firefighters. He urged prayer for the victims and their families. Further details regarding the number of casualties and the unfolding of events were not immediately available. Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the affected areas, the Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road, which is situated about 4 miles north of Coeur d’Alene, a city near the Washington state border.

The US Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, stated that the department was closely monitoring the situation and called for justice for Idaho’s first responders.
