First sitting of the newly elected German Bundestag – DW – 25/03/2025

Leftist party’s longest-serving member Gregor Gysi set to give opening speech at Germany’s Bundestag session on March 25, 2025. The 77-year-old politician, while not the oldest lawmaker in the new Bundestag, will not hold an endless speech and has promised to speak for a good half-hour. Gysi has been a member of the Bundestag for almost 31 years. Some Bundestag lawmakers are taking their seats for the first time, including new members of the AfD, FDP, and SPD. The demographic makeup of the Bundestag is improving with a younger average age and a rising share of lawmakers with a migrant background, but diversity remains a challenge, especially with a declining share of female lawmakers. The Bundestag session has begun with a reduced number of seats, from 733 to 630, and the new parliament must choose a new president. Coalition talks between the CDU/CSU and the SPD, who are in talks to form a government, have identified several sticking points.
