Five or more fatalities reported following an explosion at the Asturias coal mine – DW – March 31, 2025

A coal mine in the northern Asturias region of Spain experienced an explosion on Monday, according to emergency services who were initially notified about a “machine problem.” At least five people were confirmed dead and three suffered serious injuries, with other reports indicating a total of nine people were injured and two were missing. Rescue efforts were promptly initiated with helicopters and ambulances rushing to the mine in Delgana. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez extended his “sincere condolences” to the victims’ families and wished the wounded a “speedy recovery.” He also expressed gratitude to the emergency services involved in the rescue operation.
