Daura, a city in northern Nigeria, was the site of the burial of Muhammadu Buhari, a former president of Nigeria, on Tuesday. As thousands gathered to pay their respects, current President Bola Tinubu was also present. After a long battle with an undisclosed illness, Buhari passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in London, where he often went to seek medical assistance throughout his presidency. Leading Nigeria twice, from 1983 to 1985 and from 2015 to 2023, Buhari’s reign as both a military dictator and a democratically elected president is remembered for a regression in human rights and security. Following the transfer of power to Tinubu in 2023, Buhari retreated from the public eye. His burial service saw a military parade in Katsina state, 21 gun salutes, and the arrival of his coffin adorned in the nation’s colours. Various dignitaries and figures dressed in traditional Muslim attire were among those who received the coffin. Additionally, Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning in Buhari’s memory.
