Former South Korean First Lady Faces Bribery Allegations – DW – August 29, 2025

Kim Keon Hee, the wife of South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk Yeol, has been charged with bribery and other crimes according to a special prosecutor’s team. This marks the first time in the nation’s history that a first lady has faced similar charges. The accusations are part of an investigation into the ousted leader’s brief declaration of martial law last year.

The probe is being conducted under the administration of the new liberal government led by President Lee Jae Myung. Prosecutors have initiated three special investigations focused on Yoon’s circle. Both Yoon and Kim are currently incarcerated, with the former president undergoing a trial for charges including insurrection. Other prominent figures such as the former defense minister, safety minister, and senior military and police officials have also been arrested for their involvement in the failed attempt to seize power.

The charges against Kim include violating the Political Funds Act and the Capital Markets Act, as well as accepting bribes for mediation. It is alleged that she received polling data for Yoon 58 times free of charge during the 2022 presidential elections and used her influence to secure a party ticket for a member. Additionally, she is accused of stock manipulation and receiving bribes in the form of a diamond necklace and Chanel bags.

Kim’s lawyers have denied these charges, calling reports of bribery baseless speculation. If the allegations are proven true in court, Kim may face years in prison. These charges were levied two months after the special investigation was launched and two weeks after Kim was detained under a special warrant.

Special prosecutors also indicted former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on Friday on charges of aiding the former president and perjury.
