French President Emmanuel Macron is set to visit Cairo for three days starting Sunday, where he will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi for the twelfth time since Macron took office in 2017. The meeting is particularly significant given the current regional crises in Syria, Libya, Sudan, and Israel, as well as Egypt’s human rights record. France is keen to play a mediating role in the Middle East conflict and to strengthen economic and strategic ties with Egypt, which has been a long-standing partner since the former President Charles de Gaulle’s time. Despite this, human rights organizations are urging Macron to address Egypt’s poor human rights record during his visit.
