A catastrophic explosion involving a gas tanker truck on a highway in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa district has resulted in three deaths and 67 injuries, according to the city’s mayor. The incident, occurring under a highway overpass in the southeast of the metropolitan area, not only claimed lives but also inflicted severe damage, engulfing both the truck and adjacent vehicles in flames and smoke. Among the injured, 19 individuals suffered severe burns of the second and third degrees. The city’s head of government, Clara Brugada, declared the event an “emergency” and confirmed the transport of the wounded to various hospitals across Mexico City. Prosecutors are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, with preliminary findings suggesting the truck overturned prior to the incident. The gas tanker was carrying 49,500 liters of gas, and the explosion took place along a major roadway leading to Puebla. Consequently, the roadway has been temporarily closed.
