A significant number of individuals sustained injuries following a fire outbreak at a gas pipeline operated by Petronas, Malaysia’s state energy firm, on Tuesday, as reported by the fire department. According to news agencies, approximately 100 people were injured, with Reuters and AFP stating that around 60 individuals were hospitalized due to their injuries. The incident took place near the capital Kuala Lumpur, causing many residents to evacuate their homes.
The fire, which occurred during Eid celebrations, resulted from a gas pipeline leak spanning around 500 meters, as stated by Selangor state fire officials. The valve connected to the affected pipeline has been closed, and eyewitnesses mentioned that the blaze could be seen several kilometers away. Seven residents were rescued from their burning houses. Mohd Najwan Halimi, the chairman of the Selangor Disaster Management Committee, confirmed ongoing rescue operations in the village of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, where people were trapped in their houses. A resident described the sudden loud bang followed by chaos, leading to immediate evacuation.
