Israeli army claims it attacked Syria following projectiles strike
“Two projectiles were detected crossing from Syria into Israeli territory, and landed in open spaces,” the IDF shared on their Twitter account.
In a follow-up tweet, the IDF confirmed that their “artillery units targeted locations in southern Syria” following the projectiles launch.
Syrian official news agency SANA reported the strikes were aimed at “the Yarmuk Basin, located in the western part of Daraa” province.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based conflict monitoring group, reported violent explosions in southern Syria but no casualties were reported.
According to Israel, the strikes are intended to prevent advanced weapons from reaching Syria’s new government, which is led by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whom they consider to be jihadists.
Israeli media indicated that Tuesday’s projectiles were the first from Syria to hit Israeli territory since former Syrian President Bashir Assad stepped down in December.
What group is responsible for the Syria projectiles?
A group identifying as the Mohammed Deif Brigades, believed to be named after a Hamas military leader killed in an Israeli attack in Gaza last year, claimed responsibility in a Telegram post, as reported by AP news agency.
The group was previously unknown on social media until a few days before.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Twitter that Syria’s leader is “fully accountable” for the projectiles launch.
Syria’s foreign ministry, as per a statement on state-run TV, has yet to confirm the accuracy of reports about strikes from Syria towards Israel.
“We maintain our position that Syria is not and will not pose a threat to any party in the region,” the statement read.
