German Airports Targeted by Strikes, Including Frankfurt and Nine Others – DW – July 3, 2025

On Friday, Verdi announced that workers at Frankfurt Airport and ten other airports in Germany will go on strike this Monday.

The strikes will also affect the second-busiest airport in Munich, as well as airports in Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hannover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig-Halle.

Travelers can expect the majority of Fraport employees to join the strike, which is set to begin on Monday at midnight. Approximately 23,000 employees of ground handling service providers will participate in the strike, affecting check-in and baggage handling services.

According to the ADV airport association, Frankfurt and Munich airports will operate 2,000 flights on Monday. Both airports have advised passengers not to come to the airport as there will likely be no departures, with over 150,000 passengers expected to be affected.

Berlin/Brandenburg airport has announced that all flight operations will be shut down on Monday.

The strike comes after wage negotiations for public sector employees fell through. Verdi is seeking a collective wage agreement for about 2.5 million public sector workers, demanding an 8% pay increase, higher bonuses, and three additional days off. Local municipalities and the federal government have stated that these proposals are not financially feasible.

Other sectors affected by the strike include healthcare workers, 20,000 of whom went on strike on Thursday, and kindergarten workers, who will strike on Friday. Another round of negotiations is scheduled for next week.
