In Herne, which is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, law enforcement officers fatally shot a man after he allegedly attacked them with a knife. German tabloid Bild reported that the 51-year-old man had earlier harassed his neighbor with a knife that morning. When the police arrived at the scene, he reportedly threw objects out his window at the police cars, smashing the glass.
According to the police, upon entering the house to confront the man, he charged at them with a knife, prompting the officers to shoot him. The man received medical attention at the site but unfortunately, medical staff were unable to save his life.
This incident follows the fatal shooting of another man by police officers in nearby Dortmund just a few days ago. Two other high-profile knife attacks have occurred this year: a stabbing in Berlin last month and a deadly attack in Bavaria in January. These attacks have influenced political discourse in Germany, with major political parties using the incidents to promote their tough-on-crime agendas.
Additionally, it has been noted that police violence has increased dramatically in recent years, with reports showing a sharp rise in officer-related fatalities in Germany over the past few years. Edited by: Alex Berry.
