Germany becomes a battleground for Eritrea’s disputes – DW – 04/01/2025

On March 26, German authorities executed a significant raid against suspected members of the Brigade N’Hamedu across six German states and in Denmark, as per a statement from the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. The raid targeted 17 individuals accused of either founding or being members of a domestic terrorist group. Security agencies have identified the Brigade N’Hamedu as a terrorist organization, which is allegedly responsible for orchestrating violent attacks at Eritrean festivals in Germany during 2022 and 2023. The group is said to be internationally networked with the aim of overthrowing the government in Eritrea. Some of its members also deem violence against German state institutions as legitimate. The Eritrean government maintains control over its diaspora, enforcing a 2% diaspora tax and controlling cultural events known as Eritrean festivals, which have evolved from celebrations of freedom to propaganda platforms supporting the regime, as per experts. A platform like the Eritrean Research Institute for Policy and Strategy (ERIPS) has condemned the police raids and highlighted the misclassification of individuals as “terror suspects”. Meanwhile, relations between Germany and Eritrea face a delicate situation, where Germany seeks to balance its stance against the Eritrean government’s influence on its diaspora and its opposition to violent actions by groups like the Brigade N’Hamedu. The German action against the Brigade N’Hamedu is viewed as a measure that could improve Germany’s standing with the Eritrean regime, which is interested in enhancing its ties with Germany.
