Germany Election Outcomes: Implications for Asian Relations? – DW – February 25, 2025

Germany’s conservative political parties, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister-party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), triumphed in the recent national election, positioning CDU leader Friedrich Merz to potentially become the next chancellor of Europe’s economic powerhouse. Amid an election closely watched due to international tensions, Merz emphasized the need for Europe to achieve independence from the US regarding defense and highlighted the importance of strengthening EU defense cooperation.

Germany, alongside the EU, views China as both a trading partner and a “systemic rival.” In light of the election outcome, China expressed its readiness to enhance bilateral ties with the incoming German government. Experts suggest that Germany may ease restrictions on Chinese investment and advocate for a trade and investment pact with China, especially considering potential trade disputes with the US.

While the Chinese market remains crucial for German businesses, India has become a key growing economy in South Asia. Germany and India’s trade stands at a record high, with the German government passing measures to attract skilled Indian workers to address labor market gaps.

India does not anticipate significant disruptions, emphasizing the bipartisan support for the Germany-India relationship. India views Germany as an essential partner in a multipolar world and does not foresee political upheavals.

In addition to managing relations with China, Merz faces challenges in dealing with the Taliban regarding migration issues. He campaigned on overhauling Germany’s asylum rules and suggested readiness to engage with the Taliban to increase the deportation of Afghan migrants. However, this approach raises concerns about the potential normalization of the Taliban’s fundamentalist regime and its implications for human rights, especially for Afghan women.

The German election’s outcome also drew significant attention in Iran, with discussions on social media about potential shifts in Germany’s policies towards Tehran. In Indonesia, expectations remain for continued trade and strong relations with Germany, seeing the election as an opportunity to strengthen ties amid the shifting global order.

The report was compiled with contributions from various sources, highlighting the international implications of Germany’s political landscape.
