Germany Embraces Change: DW – February 24, 2025

The Union of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and its Bavarian counterpart, the Christian Social Union (CSU), won the federal election in Germany, securing approximately 28% of the vote. Although this falls short of the party’s goal of over 30%, it is still the most votes received and positions them to appoint the next chancellor. Party leader Friedrich Merz acknowledged the verdict but also conveyed that the CDU/CSU will need coalition partners to form a majority government, ruling out a partnership with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) due to ideological differences. The election results saw significant losses for the Social Democrats (SPD), who suffered their worst result since 1890, and the Free Democrats (FDP), who failed to meet the 5% threshold. The Greens managed to contain their losses and expressed willingness to negotiate with the CDU/CSU. Amid these political changes, Germany faces pressing issues and the challenge of financing its future budgets, given its current economic crisis and increased military spending. The outcome of this election and the subsequent coalition talks will significantly impact the country’s governance and international leadership role.
