Three days after the election victory of Germany’s conservative CDU and CSU, the bloc’s leader, Friedrich Merz, met with French President Emmanuel Macron for a private dinner in Paris. Merz expressed gratitude for Macron’s friendship and trust in Franco-German relations and stated that together, their countries can achieve great things for Europe.
If Merz succeeds in forming a coalition government, he may assume office in a few weeks. Until then, current Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains in office. However, Merz is under pressure as US President Donald Trump may be close to negotiating a peace deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine, without involving Ukraine or the EU.
