On Wednesday, the Central Council of Jews in Germany urged the Berlin government to continue its unwavering support for Israel. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who joined the group in Frankfurt to commemorate its 75th anniversary, reaffirmed this stance. Established in Frankfurt five years after World War II, the organization serves as the political, social, and religious representative of the German Jewish community. Council president Josef Schuster emphasized the importance of Germany’s solidarity with Israel, urging Merz not to be swayed by the opinions of other European countries or by individual lawmakers. Since the conflict in Gaza began, Germany has been one of Israel’s most significant supporters. In a video addressing the Council, Merz pledged to tirelessly work for the friendship between the two countries, warning that criticism of Israel could often be a pretext for antisemitism. He stressed that such criticism should not lead to hatred of Jews or turn away the Federal Republic from Israel. Merz emphasized that the presence of Jewish life and culture is essential for a good future in Germany.
