Greenland’s parliamentary election polls come to a close – DW – 03/12/2025

Elections for Greenland’s legislative body, the Inatsisartut, concluded on Tuesday. The parliamentary election will determine who will lead discussions on US President Donald Trump’s efforts to gain influence in the strategically significant Arctic country. Approximately 40,000 individuals were eligible to vote in the election for Greenland’s 31-seat parliament. The voting process, involving residents from remote areas, may take weeks to count due to transportation by boat, plane, and helicopter. The campaign focused on healthcare and education, but discussions about Greenland’s future relationship with Denmark dominated the election. Greenland is a self-governing territory under Danish control. Pro-independence supporters hope for a strong mandate that could accelerate Greenland’s path towards full sovereignty. The election has gained international attention due to Trump’s ongoing attempts to influence the island’s political landscape. His last-minute efforts and statements have sparked both astonishment and rejection from Greenlanders. Most Greenlanders do not support becoming part of the United States, according to opinion polls. Economic factors, including valuable deposits of oil, gas, gold, uranium, and zinc on the island, may also be driving US interest in Greenland. The election has implications beyond security concerns, as climate change may make these resources easier to extract, increasing the island’s geopolitical significance. The election’s outcome may determine Greenland’s future autonomy and its relationship with the United States and Denmark.
