Greens’ Struggle with Disappointing Show in German Elections – DW – 02/25/2025

What does helplessness and frustration look like? It could be similar to Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock, who appeared extremely serious after the Bundestag elections. The Greens only received 11.61% of the vote, a decline from their 14.8% share in 2021. The party, which served as a coalition partner in the previous government, is now relegated to the opposition and will have no real say in the next government.

Habeck, the failed chancellor candidate, did not feel he did anything wrong in the election campaign, stating that the party was united and presented itself as an ally to the SPD and CDU/CSU. Baerbock has remained quiet about her future plans. Habeck mentioned that he was open to a coalition government with the CDU/CSU, which Banaszak believes cost him votes.

The Greens also lost votes to the Left Party, which defended its liberal immigration policy. The party’s performance is a result of the failure of its coalition government with the SPD and FDP. The Greens will now face a more challenging role in opposition. The party may play a decisive role in helping Merz reform the country’s debt rules if the US no longer wants to provide for Germany’s defense.
