“This marks the end of soup splashed on Van Goghs, cornstarch at Stonehenge, and our marches through the streets,” the environmental activist group declared.
Despite its controversial methods, Just Stop Oil claims its campaign was among the most successful civil resistance efforts in recent times.
The decision to end the campaign follows the British government’s official commitment to halt new gas and oil projects.
Notable Protests
Established in the UK in February 2022, Just Stop Oil rose to prominence through acts of disruption, including road blockades, interruptions at sporting and theatrical events, and the defacement of artwork.
Recently, its activists have engaged in actions such as pouring liquid latex over a Tesla store robot, spraying orange powder at Stonehenge, and painting over Charles Darwin’s grave at Westminster Abbey.
Critics have denounced their sometimes-illegal tactics, leading to the imprisonment of some activists.
“Just Stop Oil will continue to speak the truth in court, advocate for our political prisoners, and challenge the UK’s restrictive anti-protest laws,” the group stated.
The group plans a final Just Stop Oil action at Parliament Square next to the British Parliament in April.
After this, they intend to continue their civil resistance efforts in a new capacity.
“We are developing a new strategy to face this reality and fulfill our responsibilities during this time,” the group said.
