Harvard University loses eligibility for new federal grants under Trump administration – DW – 06/05/2025

The Trump administration has barred Harvard University from receiving new federal grants, intensifying its conflict with the Ivy League school over allegations of anti-Semitism, political bias, and mismanagement, according to a statement released by the US Department of Education on Monday.

This move will freeze billions of dollars in future research grants and other financial aid to the prestigious institution.

In a letter sent to Harvard, Education Secretary Linda McMahon alleged that the university has failed to meet its “legal obligations” and should no longer receive grants from the federal government until it demonstrates “responsible management of the university.” She stated that the letter marks the end of new grants to the university.

Trump Aims to Shift Policies at Top Universities

The Trump administration has increased scrutiny on US universities, criticizing their diversity programs and claiming they are not doing enough to combat anti-Semitism on campuses.

Last year, universities across the US witnessed protests as students called for institutions to divest from Israel due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Trump has accused these protests of supporting Hamas, the militant group responsible for the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israeli civilians. However, protesters, including some Jewish groups, argue that the government incorrectly conflates criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism and support for Hamas.

The US government has also cut off funding to other colleges like Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Cornell University for failing to align with Trump’s policies.

Harvard Challenges “Illegal Government Overreach”

Last month, Harvard University took legal action against the US government after it froze $2.2 billion (€1.94 billion) in federal grants to the institution and sought to revoke the school’s tax-exempt status.

On Monday, the university received another letter from the administration, which doubled down on demands that could impose unprecedented and improper control over Harvard University, with significant implications for higher education.

The university vowed to “continue to defend against the government’s attempt to stifle research and innovation that ensure Americans’ safety and security.”

Harvard, one of the world’s leading universities, boasts a $53 billion endowment. In 2023, federal funding accounted for 10.5% of its revenue.
