The situation in the village of Gjader and the port town of Shengjin in northwestern Albania has returned to normal, with no migrants remaining in the facilities constructed to house them under an agreement with Italy. The agreement, ratified by the Albanian parliament in February 2024, aimed to have Italy build migrant holding centers in Albania to process asylum applications, but it has faced setbacks after court rulings in Italy deemed the transfers of migrants to Albania unlawful. Italian officials and NGO experts monitoring the situation have left Albania, and there are concerns that repurposing the centers as repatriation facilities would violate human rights. Despite these challenges, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remains committed to making the agreement work.
