Icelandic authorities have evacuated the town of Grindavik and the nearby Blue Lagoon spa due to the indication of a possible volcanic eruption. Although no magma has reached the surface yet, the Met Office in Iceland believes that an eruption is highly likely. The town, which was largely evacuated a year ago when the volcano became active, is situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 53 km away from the capital, Reykjavik. The nearby Blue Lagoon luxury spa is also being evacuated. The magma flow has been accompanied by a series of small earthquakes, similar to those that have preceded previous eruptions. However, the eruptions in the area have not directly affected the capital or disrupted air traffic. Iceland’s nickname, “The Land of Ice and Fire,” references its many glaciers and volcanoes.
