On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he is initiating measures to revoke all visas held by individuals with South Sudanese passports and restrict further visa issuance to prevent their entry into the United States. The decision comes as a response to the transitional government of South Sudan’s failure to timely accept the return of its repatriated citizens, as posted by Rubio on social media.
Rubio mentioned in a statement that “immediate actions will be taken to revoke visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and restrict any additional issuance in order to prevent entry into the United States, due to the South Sudanese transitional government’s failure to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.”
However, the US will be prepared to reassess these actions once South Sudan demonstrates full cooperation, added Rubio. This is the first instance of such a measure targeting all passport holders from a specific country since Donald Trump, who ran on an anti-immigration platform, returned to the White House on January 20.
It is essential to note that this is an ongoing news story, and updates are expected.
