Authorities in the United Kingdom have initiated an investigation into a power outage that resulted in the closure of London Heathrow Airport.
The outage was caused by an accidental fire at an electrical substation on Friday, leading to the shutdown of the world’s fifth busiest airport for nearly a day.
Over 1,300 flights were canceled and approximately 200,000 passengers were left stranded due to the disruption.
Despite officials declaring the airport as “fully operational” on Saturday, travelers will likely experience delays lasting several days. British Airways hopes to have a near-full schedule on Sunday, but the airline’s CEO, Sean Doyle, warned that the outage’s impact could continue into next week.
The British government has ordered the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to investigate the incident.
