African countries are grappling with a mounting debt burden that disproportionately affects their ability to fund essential services such as healthcare, schools, and infrastructure. For years, African governments have allocated more resources towards debt repayment than towards healthcare, with inflation further diminishing their capacity to invest. To break this cycle, governments are exploring alternative revenue sources. Many are opting to impose consumption taxes, which are difficult to avoid as people need to consume goods and services, explains Alvin Mosioma, a tax expert and deputy director of an economic and climate program at the Open Society Foundation in Nairobi.
