Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who will chair the council, issued the decree.
What will the council be responsible for?
The council will deliberate on the challenges faced by the state, including “coordinating and managing security and political policies,” according to the Syrian president’s office on Telegram.
Foreign affairs, defense, interior ministries, and the head of Syria’s intelligence agency will also be members of the council.
In addition, the decree stated that two “advisory” members and a technical expert appointed by Sharaa will be part of the entity.
Violence intensifies
This decision comes as al-Sharaa’s forces engage in a conflict with dissidents loyal to deposed leader Bashar Assad.
Following pro-Assad gunmen’s attacks on security forces, there has been an increase in executions, primarily targeting members of the Alawite minority to which Assad belongs.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, security forces or allied groups have killed approximately 1,400 civilians.
On Monday, Syrian authorities declared the end of the crackdown against Assad supporters.
This was the most violent episode in Syria since the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) Islamist group’s rapid advance led to the fall of the Assad regime in December.
