Joseph Kent, who serves as the chief of staff to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, confirmed during a Senate intelligence committee hearing regarding his nomination to lead the US National Counterterrorism Center, “We are currently investigating this matter.”
He did not disclose which of the 18 intelligence agencies is conducting the investigation.
A report from the US Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General released in December dismissed allegations by far-right conspiracy theorists who falsely suggested that FBI agents were covertly involved in the riots.
FBI did not authorize any informants to enter the Capitol
The report stated that there were 26 FBI informants in Washington on the day of the attack but clarified that the FBI did not give any authorization for them to enter the Capitol building.
Kent’s comments were made in response to inquiries from Democratic Senator Mark Kelly.
The questions raised concerned the attack by supporters of then outgoing President Trump, who were attempting to impede Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
