In India, two men have been detained in relation to the alleged gang rapes of an Israeli woman and a local homestay operator in Koppal town, situated in the southern state of Karnataka. The incidents occurred on Thursday night while the women were stargazing with three male travelers, with a third suspect still on the loose.
An Indian tourist from among the assaulted group drowned after being pushed into a nearby canal by the assailants. The attack took place in Anegundi, a popular tourist location near the UNESCO-listed ruins of the Vijayanagar empire, known for its scenic landscapes and budget accommodations.
The victims were approached by three men on a motorcycle who demanded money, and when refused, physically assaulted and sexually attacked the women. Police recovered the body of the drowned tourist on Saturday.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the crime as a “most heinous act” and assured the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all tourists and preventing such incidents in the future. One of the Indian victims was involved in running a homestay and organizing tours for visitors.
