Israeli military releases assessment acknowledging shortcomings during Hamas’ Oct. 7 assault – DW (03/02/2025)

The IDF’s report on the October 7 attacks sanctioned an intense backlash from the Israeli public. While the findings weren’t distinct, they added another layer after several hostages were returned alive, but eight more were brought home deceased. Despite the closure of the first phase of the ceasefire agreeing on the hostage release, the subsequent stages remain ambiguous, with 59 hostages and civilians still held in Gaza.

Following the release, Israeli media posed critical questions about the IDF’s performance, with headlines like “The Blindness, the Failure, and the Questions”. The Islamist group, Hamas, took control of Gaza in 2007. Post this, Israel tightened its borders further and both parties have seen several confrontations.

For some, the detailed report arrives late; for others, it’s no surprise. The general disappointment with the IDF’s failure to protect citizens has wounded many Israelis. Despite providing residents of several kibbutzim with detailed updates of events, questions about the military and political handling remain unaddressed.

The report also highlights that the estimation of Hamas’s capability has been grossly underestimated. There was no apparent discussion about the possibility of their assessment being incorrect or what to do if it was. Intelligence and political leaders are criticized for a “conflict management” policy towards Hamas and an incorrect evaluation of its intentions. The report demonstrates that Hamas had been planning such an attack as early as 2014, with the idea known as “Jericho Wall,” attributable to Yahya Sinwar, one of the masterminds behind the attack. The 2021 war didn’t deter Hamas; instead, it felt encouraged due to the lack of a major Israeli ground operation. Many in Israel are calling for a state or political commission to investigate the roles of the political leadership. While the IDF’s Chief of Staff has resigned, Prime Minister Netanyahu has evaded full investigation responsibility.
