Six Migrant Deaths and 40 Missing After Lampedusa Shipwreck
According to Italian authorities, a tragic shipwreck near Italy’s island of Lampedusa has resulted in the deaths of six migrants and left 40 others missing.
Rescue operations by the Italian coast guard have thus far saved 10 people, and the search for additional survivors continues.
Overview of the Incidents
Survivors have informed authorities that a number of the 56 migrants onboard were swept overboard due to severe weather conditions following their departure from Tunisia on a dinghy.
The UNHCR states that the migrants originated from the Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia, and Cameroon.
The UN provides an estimate of over 2,200 migrants having drowned or gone missing in the Mediterranean in 2024, with the belief that the actual number is likely higher.
