Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro underwent intestinal surgery at the DF Star hospital in Brasilia on Sunday after being hospitalized with severe abdominal pain the previous day. According to a statement from the hospital, the surgery, known as laparotomy, was performed to treat intestinal adhesions and strengthen the abdominal wall.
The procedure, carried out over twelve hours, went smoothly without the need for a blood transfusion, as reported by the hospital. Michelle Bolsonaro, the ex-president’s wife, thanked those who had prayed for her husband on Instagram, stating that the operation was successful.
Initially, doctors had attributed Bolsonaro’s pain to complications stemming from a knife attack during his 2018 presidential campaign. Bolsonaro also acknowledged this on social media, noting that it was “a consequence of the multiple surgeries” he underwent following the stabbing.
Bolsonaro was originally hospitalized in Natal while on a tour in the politically left-leaning northeastern region of Brazil. Doctors initially stated he was stable and not in need of immediate surgery before transferring him to Brasilia. Despite experiencing similar pain episodes in the past, this time both Bolsonaro and the doctors were taken by surprise. Following additional tests, the decision to perform surgery was made due to the persistence of intestinal blockage.
In a separate political context, Bolsonaro has been touring Brazil to advocate for an amnesty bill for his supporters involved in storming the capital following his 2022 election defeat. The Brazilian Supreme Court has ruled that he will face trial for allegedly plotting to overthrow the legally elected government, a charge he denies as being politically motivated.
Despite being barred from holding office until 2030 over unsubstantiated fraud claims regarding Brazil’s electronic voting system, Bolsonaro is positioning himself as a potential candidate in the elections next year.
