Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was transported to the capital city of Brasilia on Saturday after experiencing abdominal pain, resulting in his hospitalization the previous day. On Friday, Bolsonaro was admitted to a hospital in Rio Grande do Norte due to severe abdominal pain while on a tour in northeastern Brazil. He was initially stabilized at the local hospital before being airlifted to Natal and later transferred to Brasilia via medical aircraft. Doctors attributed the pain to complications stemming from a knife attack Bolsonaro suffered during his presidential campaign in 2018, which nearly proved fatal. Since taking office in 2019, Bolsonaro has undergone multiple surgeries. Bolsonaro, now 70, stated on social media that this was the most severe episode since the knife attack, and he expects to undergo another surgery, bringing the total to five. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that Bolsonaro will face trial for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the legally elected government. However, Bolsonaro denies the charges and claims they are politically motivated. Despite being barred from running for office until 2030 due to unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, Bolsonaro continues to position himself as a potential candidate for next year’s elections.
