The revised visit comes amid strained relations between the US and Denmark, with President Donald Trump expressing his desire for the US to control Greenland, a Danish territory rich in minerals. Vice President Vance will visit the US Space Force outpost at Pituffik on the northwest coast of Greenland. The joint itinerary had been altered after protests by Greenland and Denmark due to concerns about diplomatic customs and interactions with residents expressing anger over Trump’s annexation suggestions. There will also be a rally against Trump’s plans at the US Embassy in Denmark’s capital. The newly elected Greenland parliament parties have formed a coalition government to oppose the US territorial ambitions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people and expressed a desire to collaborate with the US on defense and security matters. Despite this, Trump has reiterated his assertion that the US should exert control over Greenland, even though the Danish government has stated the territory is not for sale.
