The trial of the healthcare workers who treated Argentine footballer Diego Maradona before his death may be dismissed after a key judge stepped down. Judge Julieta Makintach recused herself after it was revealed that she was participating in a documentary about the high-profile case. The case was adjourned last week following a series of police raids that led to accusations of partiality, influence peddling, and bribery against Makintach in relation to her role in the “Divine Justice” miniseries. The prosecution and the defense supported Makintach’s removal from the case. The reason for Makintach stepping down is due to the playing of a trailer for the documentary in court, which showcased footage allegedly made from inside the courtroom, violating court rules. This prompted accusations from the prosecutor that Makintach was behaving like an actress rather than a judge. The remaining judges, Maximiliano Savarino and Veronica Di Tomasso, are expected to decide whether the trial will continue or if a new trial will be ordered. The trial is about the healthcare workers accused of negligent homicide in Maradona’s death. Diego Maradona, a considered one of the world’s best players, died in November 2020 of cardiac arrest while recovering at home from brain surgery for a blood clot. He had struggled with cocaine and alcohol addictions throughout his life. Seven members of his medical team are currently on trial for the alleged negligence leading to Maradona’s death. If found guilty, the defendants could face between eight and 25 years in prison.
