Leaders worldwide are gathering in northern China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on Sunday and Monday. Beijing is aiming to bolster its regional collaboration amidst continuing tensions with the United States over trade and security issues.
The 10-member group is convening for a two-day summit in Tianjin.
The SCO is composed of China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, with 16 additional countries as observers or “dialogue partners”.
China’s Xinhua news agency has hailed it as the “largest-ever SCO summit”. Beijing views the gathering as a counter to the Western-dominated international system.
Established in 2001, the SCO has evolved into a platform for economic and security cooperation, with Beijing and Moscow serving as the chief driving forces.
Over time, China has leveraged its economic clout, while Russia has utilized the forum to sustain relationships with Central Asia.
The war in Ukraine has increased Moscow’s dependence on the bloc.
The summit also serves as a platform for India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting China for the first time in seven years.
Recent strained relations with Washington and the impact of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs have brought New Delhi and Beijing closer.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has advocated for multilateralism, describing China as a “fundamental pillar” of the system.
