North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has supervised a test firing of two “new” air defense missiles, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.
According to the North Korean state media, the launch occurred on Saturday and demonstrated the “superior combat capability” of the improved missile systems. No details on the missiles themselves or the location of the test site were provided.
KCNA stated that the launch specifically proved the “very suitable” technological features of the projectiles for destroying various aerial targets.

South Korea’s military said Saturday that it had fired warning shots at around 30 North Korean troops last week for briefly crossing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a heavily mined area that separates the two nations.
North Korean state media quoted Army Lieutenant General Ko Jong Chol as saying the incident was a “premeditated and deliberate provocation.” Ko affirmed that it was a serious escalation that could lead to uncontrollable consequences in the already tense region.
The missile test coincided with the United States and South Korea conducting joint military exercises, which began on Monday. Kim Jong Un had previously stated his opposition to these annual drills, labeling them “hostile and confrontational.”
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed his wish for warmer ties and improved military trust with North Korea, a significant shift from his hawkish predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol. However, Pyongyang remains dismissive of any improvements in bilateral relations.
Lee is set to meet with US President Donald Trump on Monday for their first summit.
