Two helicopters collided mid-air in western Finland, resulting in the deaths of five people, according to police reports on Saturday.

The collision occurred near the town of Kauttua, with the wreckage falling approximately 700 meters from the Ohikulkutie road.

Johannes Siirila, Detective Chief Inspector, stated that five individuals died in the helicopter accident near Eura Airport on Saturday.

What do we know about the crash?

Finnish police have confirmed that three individuals were traveling in one helicopter and two in the other.

The civilian helicopters had taken off from the Estonian capital Tallinn, en route to Piikajarvi Airport in Kokemaki, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Eura airport.

Media reports indicate that the helicopters were carrying Estonian businessmen.

Finnish and Estonian authorities are collaborating closely, as stated in a police statement.

The accident site has been cordoned off for preliminary investigations, and roads leading to Eura airport have been closed.

“Several rescue units and police patrols” were present at the scene, following a crash report at 12:35 p.m. local time (10:35 a.m. GMT)

The two helicopters involved in the collision were located approximately 100 meters apart in a wooded area near Eura airport.

The exact cause of the collision remains unclear.

According to Finnish newspaper Iltalehti, a witness reported seeing the helicopters collide during a maneuver.
