Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi, a recipient of the Medal of Freedom and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, suffered an injury on Sunday during the Leagues Cup match between Inter Miami and Necaxa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This forced the 38-year-old captain of Inter Miami to leave the game. The injury occurred in the 11th minute when Messi collided with Necaxa defender Alexis Pena and fell to the ground. He then sat alone in the midfield, waiting for trainers to arrive. As Inter Miami completed the game with a 2-2 draw, manager Javier Mascherano stated that Messi experienced “hamstring discomfort” and the severity of the injury would be assessed the following day. Despite captaining both Inter Miami and the Argentinian national team, Messi has not yet scored in this year’s Leagues Cup. In 2023, he appeared in only half of Inter Miami’s league games due to minor ailments and injuries. in 2024, he suffered a torn leg muscle during the 2024 Copa America final for Argentina.
