A cable linking two cabins broke just before a deadly funicular crash in Lisbon this week, according to an initial investigative report released on Saturday. Portugal’s air and rail accident investigations bureau (GPIAAF) stated that the cable was inspected visually hours before the derailment and no anomalies were found with the vehicles’ cable or braking systems.
The Gloria funicular, a yellow railway car that travels up and down a steep slope in central Lisbon, veered off its tracks near Avenida da Liberdade on Wednesday, which resulted in 16 fatalities and 21 injuries.
Two separate investigations are underway, one by GPIAAF and another by the prosecutors’ office. The GPIAAF stated that the investigations are independent and distinct in purpose. A preliminary report will be made public within 45 days, while a final report containing facts, analysis, conclusions, and safety recommendations will be made later. If a final report is not possible within one year, then an interim report will be issued.
