Police Arrest Man After Car Plows into Liverpool’s Premier League Win Celebration
A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested by police in the United Kingdom after a car driven by him crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory. According to Merseyside Police, the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
The car-raamming incident, which took place on Monday, resulted in at least 27 people being hospitalized, with two individuals suffering serious injuries. Four children were among the injured, including one child whose injuries were considered serious. In addition to those hospitalized, 20 people were also treated at the scene.
The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) had a substantial presence nearby due to the victory parade and responded quickly to the incident. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service stated that one child and three other individuals had to be removed after being trapped under a vehicle.
A witness, Harry Rashid, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters, described the moment the car began hitting people. He stated that the driver continued to plow through the crowd after initially knocking people off the bonnet of the car.
Liverpool FC expressed their thoughts and prayers for those affected by the incident and stated that they are in direct contact with local authorities. The incident occurred towards the end of an open-bus parade through the city to celebrate the season’s triumph, with over one million people in attendance, as it was held on a bank holiday.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed his shock at the scenes in Liverpool and thanked the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to the incident.
