Rose Girone, who is regarded as the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust, has passed away, according to a statement from the Claims Conference’s New York office.
Girone, who was born in Poland in 1912, died on Monday at a nursing home in Bellmore, New York.
Girone’s child, Reha Bennicasa described her as a strong and resilient lady who made the most of difficult circumstances. She was always level-headed and commonsensical, Bennicasa said.
“The Israeli embassy in Berlin praised her life as a testament to survival and strength,” the statement read.
Despite being forced to flee after Kristallnacht, Girone and her husband escaped the Nazis by finding refuge in Shanghai.
They later settled in New York in 1947. Girone was also a successful business owner, opening knitting shops, and a knitting immigrant.
Girone, who among 14,000 Holocaust survivors, has passed away, leaving Mirjam Bolle the title of oldest living Holocaust survivor. She is a Dutch-born holocaust survivor who turns 108 on March 20.
